Born and raised in Mississauga, Ontario, Matt grew up playing AAA hockey in the Greater Toronto Hockey League. He went on to play for the Guelph Dominators of the Mid-Western Junior B division. After a very strong two seasons and winning MVP honors he was recruited by Cornell University.
Matt graduated from Cornell University in 2006 from the undergraduate business program. While at Cornell, he played Division 1 Mens Hockey for four years and captained the team his senior year. He scored 71 goals and 138 points in 134 games. He also received 2nd team All-American and All-Academic honors. His team won two ECAC championships, along with three NCAA national tournament appearances.
Moulson went on to have a successful hockey career having played 1,074 professional hockey games totaling 719points. His career begun being drafted in the 9th round of the 2003 entry draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Upon graduating from Cornell, Moulson signed a two-year entry level deal with the Los Angeles Kings. After playing three years for the Kings and their AHL affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs, Moulson signed a one-year deal with the New York Islanders. Matt went on to record three consecutive 30 goal seasons with the Isles. At the start of the 2013-2014 season, Matt was traded to the Buffalo Sabres and then again later that season at the trade deadline to the Minnesota Wild. As a free agent in the summer of 2014, Moulson signed a five-year deal back with the Buffalo Sabres.
Still looking for a championship late in his career Moulson went back to play in the American Hockey League. He played 2 seasons for the Ontario Reign and 3 with the Hershey Bears. In Hershey, he captained the team his last two seasons and was able to help them win the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy as regular-season champion. In 2021, after suffering a back injury during a game that required emergency surgery, Moulson was forced to retire from the professional ranks.
Upon retiring, Matt continued to stay in the game of hockey and worked as a pro scout for the Toronto Maple Leafs, while also coaching the 2013 Connecticut Jr. Whalers. Realizing his true passion for helping youth hockey players, Matt is currently coaching the 2013 Mid-Fairfield AAA team as well as providing video analysis and mentorship for youth, junior and college hockey players.
Matt currently resides in Cos Cob, CT with his wife Alicia and their two children, Mila and George.
